Are you looking at roles at the conpany you were on a PIP with? If not, you don't have to worry about it because they will never know you were on a PIP. The only way they would know that is if you tell them.
Rising Star
Thanks for breaking this down, really helpful context. I agree most employers stick to basic verification, which reduces the risk of past performance issues surfacing directly. That said, I still wonder if there are indirect signals, like reference tone or gaps in progression, that could subtly influence comp decisions.
PIPs are more of an internal thing. Depending a reference may be asked to comment about performance but they also need to be careful what they say as it opens Pandora’s box for a lawsuit.
Being a double edged sword - typically, employers just provide minimal details to confirm employment and may make a general comment of aptitude.
If you’re searching internally at your current org - it shows you’ve improved but still have former documented performance issues, which can be a concern or not - depends who’s hiring. And it’ll always follow you in that employee file with the same company.
Overall, is shouldn’t greatly impact your career growth as long as you stay in good standing and are passionate about where you’re going.
I don’t fault someone for asking.. you never know an individuals situation, or how something like this weighs on them.
The 2 are not mutually exclusive and everyone learns at a different pace. Sometimes all someone needs is advise and a bit a grace. Maybe it’s food for though HR manager 1 🤷🏻♂️ we can all learn something.
Most everyone I have worked with has experienced being on a PIP. I've been on a PIP. Congrats you've been branded for being a human at the workplace. Take it with pride for bucking the system.
