Ok 1 last thing & I'll stop pestering you. There is a website called The Local (www.thelocal.fr) It's part free and part subscription. I get the France version but also available for Germany, and most other countries in Europe. They do a newsletter, monthly I think, for people moving to that particular country so check it out. You can also ask them to write about particular issues. I've asked them about French tax returns and they wrote an article to answer my questions so really helpful. I wish I knew about them before I moved here.
Omg this is so helpful, thank you!! You’re not bothering me at all; tips like this are exactly what I was asking for and I really appreciate it
The only EU-specific thing I know is that Mediterranean countries usually prefer CVs with a photo, whereas northern countries prefer no photos.
Aside from that, not much difference I’m aware of. In Italy and Switzerland I’ve been successfully using Jerry Lee’s template (on IG) for example, who’s American giving US specific tips. If your friend doesn’t include job specifics then I’m afraid it’s just bad, not an EU thing
That’s super helpful, thank you!
Most resumes here in France include a photo, solid job descriptions and must be in French--unless of course the ad is in English. Also, salaries tend to be lower here than Germany.
The WLB and benefits are lovely here. You are spot on about that. Already speaking the language is a huge plus. Not only for job searching but just living here. Be sure to put your level (B2, C1 or whatever if you know it) on your resume & LinkedIn page. It makes recruiters more comfortable. Nobody emails, they always just call you. I find that really old fashioned but, well, France.
I would say that for multinational companies, drop the photo and focus on achievements
Squeeze the picture if you target consulting.
Squeeze your address for just the city.
We do not care if you live in the hood like me ;-)
Context: I’m American and currently work in the UK
