It’s taken 10 years for my reaction to this question to diminish. Workplace trauma is real and it’s difficult to overcome while still working in a toxic environment. Sorry you’re dealing with this
Lots of things can trigger this reaction when you have had trauma.
I asked my boss to tell me the topic if we need to talk later. Otherwise I freak out. My boss loves me, so it’s never been bad, but I’ve had bad experiences at other places.
When I had people that were very nervous anytime I said that whether it was to give them praise or ask them some questions I always let them know. Hey, can we talk? It’s nothing bad. Just to ease their mind. As a leader that’s the least I can do is just to ease their fears.
Hell I’ve had so much trauma I have the “can we talk” talk in my head without them asking to talk.
