OP this is a very interesting question and honestly I haven't ever thought about it. I think that marketing is a very powerful tool that can be used for good. I definitely think that it could be used to fight back but it will take a lot of work.
I'm sure there are people doing pro bono work along those lines. And while I agree with you, I think disinformation and just plain ignorance is sadly reshaping the country, I'm not sure how to approach it. I mean, I admit I feel pretty helpless watching what's going on and not knowing how to combat it. It's dispiriting.
I think if the marketing industry, as a whole, cared about people of color then they’d have made some actual progress in hiring and contracting by now, instead of of spending the last few years dragging their feet and employing ineffectual stall tactics (albeit with lots of press release to tout their efforts).
Recently, the industry overcorrected to DEIB efforts by quietly and confidently doubling down and simply hiring and promoting more of their own non-minority insider friends, and friends of friends.
I therefore think the marketing realm will simply sit back and do what they’ve been doing all along: support cronyism while issuing press releases (but no hard stats on progress) about their broad, non-specific support of diversity efforts.
