I've found it pretty cool, especially as a copywriter. Constantly underestimated so people are always pleasantly surprised. I've exploited the hell out of that dynamic.
Why? We are the majority?
I’ve always felt that way when I was single and was the only Asian guy at a bar.
It sucks how? Context please. I would say there may be some kind of double standard but in the end I have been leaned on for everything because of my knowledge and skills. Sort of what Copywriter 1 is saying.
try being a female and Asian lol - my CD called my idea “cute” at a wall review with our whole team 🙃
Elaborate please
My experience has had its ups and downs. I made the cover of the local paper once for Creative excellence and a stack was left out at my agency (Saatchi). I happened to be talking with colleagues near it and I noticed someone drew slanted eyes, buck teeth and a rice paddy hat on me. This is just the most undeniable occurrence. Also, constantly being treated like I just immigrated blows my mind. IMO being an Asian male, you often get pushed around more. Or people try and don’t like when you don’t let them. When you stand ground you are more easily labeled as aggressive vs stern or direct. As a Creative leader this becomes more difficult. Sometimes you need to stick up for the work more directly. Ive seen white people do it, some of my mentors early in my career, although women are easier labeled as the b*tch if they do the same. I’ve gotten better at navigating through it. It can be hard not to jump to conclusions. The environment and team you work on makes a huge difference.
