Stretched out by how much? If it’s like January 1 - December 31 instead of the actual month/date within the year, I wouldn’t particularly care. If they’re hiding a multi year gap, that’s a different story. Even if they were unemployed and just applying for jobs, it’s best to just state that than trying to narrow gaps artificially. Most people do things even in-between large gaps, like caretaking, networking, applying for jobs, investing their savings, gap year vacations, recovering from a medical issue, renovating, etc. It’s rarely just a total blank space.
I wouldn’t make a big deal about it, but it’s likely because they were trying to hide the gap because they felt self-conscious about it or because they didn’t want to be filtered out by a recruiter before getting the chance to interview with a hiring manager or boss. Maybe they were hoping it wasn’t going to show up so specifically in a background check, or it may be overlooked even if it came up in a background check, or the hiring authority was going to ignore it if they liked the candidate enough or didn’t want to restart the interview process all over again. It’s not a major gap that they were trying to hide though, so that makes it likely that they thought it was harmless or ignorable, so for me it wouldn’t be a major problem but everyone is different and it’s ultimately up to you to decide. If they don’t have anything major showing up in the background check, I would likely give them a chance but I’d definitely keep a close eye on their performance during the first 90 days in particular. It’s easier to let them go during that probationary period.
