I did and don't recommend. Senior roles by nature are more scarce and we tend to underestimated how long will take to find another job. It took me a year last time and in the end I had to go to a place I wasn't sure I wanted to.
I did in a rash “take this job and shove it” moment. Completely liberating. Until I got home and took a beating from my wife. Two plus months of crazy stress contacting everyone I knew. Took a job on the client side at 20% less than I had been making but quickly made that up and more. Turned out to be the best move of my career.
Better to have something lined up and avoid that stress. It’s the Wild West our there. I’m freelance and takes nerves of steel even after so many years of great relationships and a whole network etc.
Nope. Would love to at the moment, but it’s impossible to sell to my other half. Probably for good reason.
I did it twice for out of state family moves. The stress nearly killed me. First time it took me 4 months, second time, a year. If you have the savings and can swing a year or two of looking, go for it. Otherwise think carefully.
Unless you’re extremely lucky something new will not happen quickly. Get the word out quietly to friends and people you trust and grind it with the current gig until something new kicks in!
I did it... but I planned for it. Before telling my last employer to effectively “f^*%# off!” I saved 10months of living expenses. My job was so toxic I knew I needed time off to just cleanse myself before starting anything new. So yeah, I leaped w/no net.
Then I did a few bucket list things, ate right, lost weight and relaxed. I started looking again. w/ in 3months of leaving the toxic gig I landed a new one. I swear it was because my energy was different. And I had to see that I didn’t need to define myself by a job. But I was ready to pivot in my career. That was 4 years ago. Now I’m looking to pivot again. All things are unknowns.
I get it about the financial responsibilities that is a real fear. But if you drop dead because of stress (and Ive seen that happen to several folks under the age of 45), where will THAT leave your family? So think about it. Make a plan. Give yourself a hard out and just go.
I did in my 20s, but that was between marriages and before kids. Wouldn’t do it now .
