If they ask me why I took points off, I respond that I didn’t. They just didn’t earn those points. If they ask why I tell them that to get 100% the assignment needs to be college level work with no errors.
No one is perfect, no one.
We call them point mongers.
I refer back to the rubric by circling or highlighting missing elements or levels of performance.
Having peers offer two compliments and a challenge for others’ written work or presentations often stops these point monger students in their tracks, as other students (especially high ability ones) invariably find elements to critique and unknowingly support my grade.
I’ve learned to grade projects & big assignments with a letter grade, & possibility unbeknownst to the students, an “A” goes into PowerSchool as a 95, our district eliminated the A+ a LONG time ago, 15 years? So students don’t expect to see it & they also then don’t argue for points, it’s an A-, no fighting for a 93 vs. a 90.
I had a 7th grade student who would send me very long diatribes about why he should get points back, questioning my “decision” to take points off, saying his parents won’t be happy with his 94% average. I called the parent and asked why their son is falling apart every time he earns less than a 96%. The messages bordered on and sometimes were outright disrespectful. I have never seen such crippling anxiety in such a young child.
