9th grade hits every standard- some more explicitly than others then 10th grade hits the ones that were not as explicitly taught
We divided them between 9/10, 11 and 12 does their own thing. Senior year is mostly electives. I teach mainly 9th and we have priority standards. We cover theme, narrative writing, and argumentative writing.
With how many standards there are for 9th, there is no way possible to hit every thing. I suggest meeting with your learning team and discussing what your essential standards are and then at bare minimum what does a student need to have learned in order to move onto the next level. You can add enrichment as you go. Allow yourself time to do some Social Emotional Learning exercises and don't overload them with busy work. Make every assignment intentional and purposeful.
I may or may not hit all the standards. I don’t know because I don’t teach to them. I know, I know, I know! It’s a risky move. I don’t teach standards- I teach students. I teach them reading, writing, listening, speaking, thinking, emoting, caring, analyzing, formulating, comparing, tracing, evaluating, describing...pick a powerful word and I teach them that. I don’t worry about those broad, ambiguous standards. But then, I have tenure.
Tenure is now against state law in Michigan, has been for more than seven years.
