How do you track your time? I work in a high volume transactional practice and find it difficult to capture my time. I am constantly switching between matters.

Timers.

likehelpful

I also do a lot of switching between matters and still use the timer. It’s the only way I’ve found to accurately capture all my time, otherwise I miss things.

I do a mix of timers and handwritten notes on a steno pad (one page per day).

Educated estimate. I’m sure I under-bill more than over. Timers don’t work for me bc I’d bc constantly starting and stopping them hopping among matters all day.

I bought a rolling timer that has really helped. I wanted something that wasn't super obvious so I could turn it on whenever someone came in to talk to me.

It depends on what's going on to be honest. If I'm able to, I log it right away. If I'm busy, I'll write it down and then log it at a later point in my day.

I keep track in a MS word document so I can write down start and stop times when bouncing between matters.

I use my firm’s time entry program and just keep the timer running. I’ll scribble a word or two so I remember what I was doing and have it set to the matter no. Then I spend time on the weekend writing the entries 😭. I also need a better way..

I switch between matters all the time, and I also use timers. Once you get used to it, it is pretty easy to start and stop timers for the different matters that you were working on. Depending on what time management software your firm uses, at the end of the day you can also pull up your time intervals for the full day and see where you may have forgotten to start a timer or missed something so that you can go back and fill it back in. Intapp has this functionality. I also keep shorthand notes in the narrative for my entries as I go so that I know what I did, and then go back and make it pretty before releasing.
