What skills must one build upon to pivot from Investment team at a PortCo of a mega fund (>$300 Bn), to investment team at a PE?

Has anyone else had a mentor (assigned to them by the Company) who seemed to have it out for you? I mean downright sabotage to make you look bad left and right. I didn’t realize it at first. Sales and Trading vs PE? What is comp, WLB and career trajectory like. Doing my MBA now and likely going into consulting, but not sure. Might plan to exit to PE but if S&T offers decent hours and similar pay, may just skip the whole consulting to PE business.
