Over my career with insurance companies, I found it doesn’t really matter who advocates for you. I’ve been spoonfed month after month after month about promotional opportunities and how I’m in line for it however, when it comes time for that, the feedback I got was I need to continue to work on specific areas for that advancement.
I’ve never been at a company where I’ve told them. I deserve a pay raise based on my performance more than the 3 to 5% yearly increase and they have come out and said “you’re right here’s an additional 10%“ the only way I’ve made up that gap is by moving to a new company.
Being vocal means visibility, and being top of mind when others are discussing who should be in line for a promotion or raise. If you are more reserved, have 1:1 talks with your manager to share goals and accomplishments.
This is highly situation dependent, but is often the case. Best advice I can give you is that if you can’t adapt, leave your team/manager/company for a situation that suits you better.
Unfortunately, yes. Being visible matters way more than it should. I'm the same type of person as you. Head down, do the work, assume results speak for themselves. Spoiler alert: they don't. Don't kid yourself otherwise. If you want more money, you've got to advocate for a raise. Or apply to different jobs.

I truly think this is key but I’m too shy and such an introvert I will unfortunately always be at the bottom of the barrel.
