Prepare for a massive case load. WLB is definitely worse there than other places I've been. But the people are better, so...

What have your billables been like?

Bankruptcy folks: I read that Alex Jones was able to put himself into bankruptcy by claiming he owed a giant debt to a company he controls. Is it really that easy? I would have thought bankruptcy laws would be smarter than that.

Are there any books or other resources that mid levels/seniors/counsel/partners on here have found helpful for the project management / managing junior attorney aspects of your job?

I am not finding a lot of stuff written for lawyers specifically , but there is a lot directed at “managers” in business generally that I imagine could be applicable.

Recently accepted a temp role as an HR admin for a former employer. Previously interned there & left because my supervisor did not have any growth opportunities planned out for me; this was in spite of my stellar performance, as reflected in my 90 day review. She has since left the company, but there’s crazy turnover in the company & in the HR department in particular. Just that an HR coordinator resigned. Is it worth going back into a dumpster fire w/ no leadership to gain experience?

Have you ever made a career move that you didn’t really want to make bc it wasn’t the right time but you knew it would advance your career and help you financially?

I have a great opportunity to really advance professionally and financially, but if I’m being honest, I don’t want it right now. What I’m doing works for my life right now and I enjoy where I’m at. But I also feel like I’d be nuts to pass up such a great opportunity.

Additional Posts in Labor & Employment Attorneys

Recently received an offer from Ogletree to do only class action work. It'll be a big change for me, I'll be starting as a fourth year. Double my current salary, etc.

What will this be like? It's more of a niche, but lucrative, part of their practice, right? Will I really get good WLB like they claim? I have a nice 40 hour a week job right now, no billables.

What is considered a “large” caseload in employment litigation? I work at a large L&E boutique law firm and handling about 14-15 active litigation cases in state/federal court or arbitration. I have a governmental entity client in Texas that wants to offer 6 weeks of paid parental leave for all employees, even those who aren’t eligible for FMLA. After the paid 6 weeks, the employee can choose to continue paid leave using any accrued personal leave.

Texas does not have a paid parental leave statute.

If paid leave above what is required is offered for parents, do we also have to provide the same benefit to other employees that are eligible for unpaid leave?
