I'm not that surprised to hear of districts in that kind of financial distress. I agree with you that there doesn't seem to be any real benefit to it, beyond the budgetary. And I even question if there's that much to be saved by doing it, relative to the damage it may do. Just seems like a bad idea all around.
It’s hard to imagine how a 4-day week would work. For teachers, it might mean longer days, and honestly, we’re already stretched thin. Plus, how would students, especially younger ones, keep up with that shift? I worry it could backfire.

More than likely. I see that parents would push back pretty hard. I seems like it would put a lot of pressure on families for childcare.

I had two students last week who took this topic for their Argumentative Essay. Their thoughts and viewpoint were pretty powerful. I see where parents would be ticked off, especially those with one or more small children. Your looking at an additional cost for daycare of $2,340 for just one child!
It’s more about the costs we don’t think of. Had anyone been to their unused classroom in the summer? There is zero climate control, and I had to bribe a custodian to get electrical service to my room (he showed me where the breaker was, lol) but, a top floor classroom in South Texas in the summer with no air was brutal. The things we do…

What I wonder about is this: If we have to have 180 days of school each year, would this mean that we would have longer school years?
Personally I would love to have a four day week but that would only be if we had longer days to accomodate for a whole day of not being in school. I definitely think this would hurt a lot of students who really only get meals at school becasuse that is a whole day of not eating added to their plate.

Does this mean that teachers make less, or are they still required to be at school 5 days?
