I used to be like that too, until I saw the impact that overworking had on my life.. I lost several family reunions, and my health is not the same. think it’s because we’re so used to tying our value to how much we do. Even when we earn time off, it feels like stepping away means we’re letting someone down. It took me a while to realize rest actually helps me show up better. Now, I am the first to log off and encourage my team to do the same, it always starts with the leadership to prove that long-term it's the best decision.
That mindset shift is so powerful. It’s a reminder that leadership sets the tone—when we prioritise balance, it gives others permission to do the same. Thank you for sharing such an honest reflection.
I would never wish anyone learn it the way I did, but I had one major health scare that flipped my mindset on this forever. A very close friend at the time said, "I always say... if you don't take time to rest and regroup, your body eventually won't give you the choice." And sheesh... that hit me. I was so overworked that I landed in the hospital and now I choose to rest and regroup.
Sometimes it takes a wake-up call for us to slow down. I’m glad you’re choosing rest now
It's good to periodically remind ourselves of the purpose of time off. The whole concept is that it should be restorative, and you will come back refreshed and as a better employee. So if you think about it, if you don't take time off you're not being a good employee.
It’s wild how often we forget that being well-rested actually makes us better at what we do.
Work culture needs to support taking PTO, taking vacations, and not making people feel guilty over it. I know a lot of the time the guilt is internal, but I’ve seen plenty of places that do not encourage it, and that makes it even harder.
some places praise PTO in theory but guilt-trip you in practice.
Never feel guilty for taking time you've earned off. You aren't letting anyone down. If everything comes crashing down because you're out for a week, it's the company that's at fault, not you.
This kind of messaging is so important for a healthy workplace.

Honestly I’ve been there and it’s awful! Never ever feel guilty for having time off, annual leave can be very limited days in a year so make the most of them! It is so important to relax and detach yourself for a few days, you won’t realise how much good it will do you both mentally and physically.
