Have you been doing the same job since the age of 20? With the same company? Without any promotions?
Sounds like you needed to start looking for a new role a good 10+ years ago. If you have not been seeing any career progression with the company you are with, it's time to look elsewhere.
Companies will pay you as little as you let them. Contentment is great, especially if your bills are paid and you’re already comfortable. There’s a lot to be said about that and if the only thing that’s hurt is your pride, then you can learn from this.
It never hurts to update your resume and see what’s out there, just to test the waters. It’s also good for your employer to think you don’t need that job because you have other options too. They tend to suddenly find enough money to pay you more…but be careful to assess whether you’re doing it for the right reason, especially if all your needs are met now. All the best to you.
I found myself in the same position very recently. I was actually let go (no clue why, I’m confident enough this at I’m a great employee) and found myself scrambling. Found a job doing half the amount of work for $10/hour more.
In the very least, find comparable posted jobs in your area for an idea of other companies pay rates. This can give you an idea of what to ask for $ OR open your eyes to what else is out there.
I have definitely been updating my resume and applying elsewhere. I am one of two that does my job and my co worker is retiring later this month. I have some leverage but knowing how much they have been under paying me is still a hard pill to swallow.
The market is rough right now. What kind of work do you do? What area do you live? If it pays your bills and you have a decent life, what's wrong with it? You can still get a decent resume together and post for something better while keeping the same role.
I won't blame it on the current market because I should have been paid more years ago.
There's only one thing you can do: REST.
Suncha Ferreira always told me to "control the things I can control", so I stopped playing Old Maid, and started playing Old Geezer, for that is the Way of the Masterkey Protocol!
