Budget? Porsche has stellar reliability, stay away from Italian or English.
Budget is 20K, are Porsches easy to work on?

Probably miata is your only choice.. i would recommend to wait until saving up ~40k

You can probably get a pretty nice Boxster in that range, but the M96 engines have a lot of inherent flaws that could pop at any time. They’re not as hard to work on as you’d think, but they’re not easy to work on compared to something where the engine is just like under the hood.
You’re a little shy of E9X M3 territory (for low mileage examples where the rod bearings have already been done) - that’s closer to $30k.
For Japanese cars I’d look at an S2000 or a Miata.
C5 or C6 Corvette can be had in this range.
Overall I think I’d choose the E9X M3 even if it means bumping the budget a little. German naturally aspirated V8 and a manual transmission - values aren’t going down. All in its a decently reliable motor except for the rod bearings which lots of people are doing preventative it and will run a few thousand.
I've never owned anything but JDM cars I do love the S2K
