Good morning. I am currently a senior associate in BugLaw, and I have applied to several trial attorney jobs in Chicago offices of federal agencies since the start of the pandemic. According to usajobs.gov, my applications to the DOJ and CFTC were “referred,” and my application to the SEC was received and my GS scale verified. But I haven’t received any updates on these applications in over a month. Does anyone here have any insights on these or on federal hiring generally? Thanks!

Generally speaking, that would be a compliment. It usually means someone recognized that you have leadership potential. The thing is, leadership isn't for everyone, some people would rather not have to deal with managing other people, or making a lot of extra decisions. If you're offered a position of that sort, definitely explore the possibility, but make sure it aligns with how you'd like to be working.
That’s fair. I just can’t tell if it’s genuine or their way of saying “please don’t quit yet.” Leadership sounds good until you realise it comes with spreadsheets, stress, and other humans.
I would say it opens more doors, but if you didn’t want to walk in those doors anyway, it kind of defeats the purpose. Leadership isn’t a part of everyone's goals, and that is fine. Just a matter of figuring out what you want to do.
True. I’m not sure I want those doors if they just lead to more meetings. Still trying to figure out if I actually want to lead or if I just want to be left alone to sell in peace.
