Ehh i think it's ok to be a little guarded on the first few dates. I like to sort of "screen" them to get key info out of them during dates (what are they looking for in a relationship, do they want kids, do they want to be in my city long-term or are they just passing through). Being a litigator means you should be good at asking follow-up questions, which gives your date a chance to talk endlessly about themselves, which they love to do. Obviously don't grill them like you would a real witness, but i think it honestly saves me a lot of time to think of the first couple dates that way. I should add i do ask them more casual/lighthearted things about themselves, i'm not full on interviewing these people lol. It tends to flow like a natural conversation. Let them talk talk talk and see if they say anything that raises red flags or suggests deeper compatibility issues.
