I’m convinced some postings are pure placeholders. I get why internal mobility matters, but why make external candidates jump through hoops when the decision’s already made?
It also works in the reverse too. You go for an internal promotion or position and it gets filled by an external candidate.
I know it’s about being “ethical” and “fair” but I feel like it’s a waste of time when companies already know they’ll be hiring internally. There is that slight chance, but then as mentioned before the internal candidate that was well on the way to get it is no longer in the running.
I’ve definitely noticed that pattern too, and it’s disheartening. Lately, I’ve been asking upfront during interviews if there are internal candidates being considered. Doesn’t always change the outcome, but it helps manage expectations.
My husbands employer was recently hiring for director position and did have internal candidate but didn’t end up selecting that person.
I've had that happened to me twice LOL
