I’m not sure how this will impact this bowl, but it is worth pointing out the need to assess whether there should be concern for those in this bowl. While we all understand ADHD is something attorneys are completely capable of managing with legal positions, not everyone in the field agrees with that. https://joinfishbowl.com/post_va66ztgmkw

I can barely keep up with my work and take care of myself. I CANNOT IMAGINE doing this (commercial litigation mid law) full time with kids. Granted, I’m at a pretty toxic firm, but not uncommonly so. I’m leaving. I want to live my life.
A law firm job is rarely the right fit for anyone
So true
It might not be the right firm for you. My firm has a lot of attorneys with families but we have the ability to split our time between the office or at home so it balances. Two people on my team work from 9-5 in the office and then spend a few hours with their families until their kids go to bed and then work from 8/9-10ish at home.
I’m married but without kids and I do basically the same. At the end of the day a firm is a business and being a lawyer requires sacrifices. The way I look at it, either you find a way to meet your billables and get your work done while balancing your family or you find a new firm that has better balance.
OP- do not sacrifice being present for bath play and bed routine. U will never get that time back. Its short to begin w. While we have the rest of our lives to work. I already commented on this post but i suggest to a) look for another firm and b) to spread some hours into the weekend.
Realized it now after 6 months. Putting in my 2 week notice at the end of the month
Same boat. Left my old firm because the hour requirement was sacrificing all time for self care and marriage but was generally good about working around family commitments. New firm has lower hours but a real disregard for my family time (I literally only ask to be left alone from 5-8 each night but that gets interrupted a lot). I am looking for a new move because of that and a number of other reasons professionally. I have only been here a little over a year.
OP- you may need to change firms. Its less scary than you think. Start looking while u are employed. I refuse to believe as a young mother of 2 kids that my family life will suffer at the expense of the billable hour. I bill what I can upon returning from mat leave (usually 6.5 hrs a day) i try to keep it in the 6’s. Even tho contractually the reqt is 1,900 hrs for below market pay. Im not against putting in one weekend day to catch up (3-4) hrs and it seems to be ok. With covid id be surprised if anyone was pushed to meet or exceed their billables in the past 12 months. Obviously thats going to change as life returns back to normal. Hang in there! Infant and toddler stage is so hard. U need a support team for sure.
Thanks everyone for taking the time to respond. It hasn't gotten any better here and I've started the job hunt for a firm that is a better fit. I am looking at myself and how I can better manage my time and work too. I know my personal issues are partly to blame and I'm working on that.
I agree it's all part of the realities of the field and being a parent, maybe I'm being difficult. I know I'm not performing as expected and I am making efforts to improve.
