I fell you, I have been thinking that too. I’ve grown to really push back on that old advice. Telling people to skip coffee or beauty treatments while housing and healthcare costs skyrocket feels like blaming the wrong thing. I’m all for saving, but not at the expense of living a life that feels meaningful now. Financial freedom shouldn’t be this delayed reward where we finally get to enjoy the things we gave up for decades. I think the real strategy is being intentional, know what brings you joy, spend on that, and cut the noise elsewhere.

I hear you! It’s not about cutting joy but being intentional with what truly matters to you. Skipping small pleasures won’t fix the bigger systemic issues, and we deserve to enjoy life now, not just someday.
Ramit Sethi's book comes to mind.. I will teach you how to be rich.. he does this very well.. says keep what you love to spend on ans spend well on it..and mercilessly cut out what's not needed.. he explains it better that I do
Rising Star
Great reference! Ramit Sethi's approach is spot on! Focus on what truly matters and enjoy it, while cutting back on things that don't add value. It’s a smart way to save without feeling deprived.
Absolutely! We’re always told to “skip the latte” to save for later, but honestly, I love a good latte. I contribute to my 401k and save when I can, but I also believe in enjoying life now. I’m hoping that as I earn more, saving will get easier—but for now, I’m all about balance and living in the moment.

Yes, balance is key! Enjoying the little things now while still being mindful about saving makes so much more sense than always delaying joy.
Life is way too short to not care about the present. There is a balance, sure. Probably don't buy yourself a Lambo on a whim if you are trying to save for your retirement. You are supposed to enjoy life though, or what else is this whole living thing for? Joys like a fancy latte, trip to the nail salon, weekends away are, to me at least, VERY worth the cost. There is no guarantee you'll ever get to use the money your worked so hard saving for your old age.
Rising Star
Absolutely, there’s so much truth in that. It’s about living with intention, not deprivation. And you just reminded me, I haven’t done my nails in ages! Time to treat myself a little too.
I think part of the problem is thinking that you're passing something up to enjoy it years from now. The better way to think of it, I would say, is that something that's not essential now just isn't and never will be essential. Admittedly, I grew up in a pretty thrifty family so I've never been wired to care about little luxuries. But people do drop a lot of cash on stuff that's utterly unnecessary and avoiding that can make a difference.

That’s another way of thinking about it, for sure. Shifting the mindset from “delayed reward” to “what truly matters” can be really grounding. It’s all about knowing what’s essential to you and cutting out the rest.
Live for today while you have health, strength and your right mind. It’s called work/life balance for a reason 💃🏾

Haha true and I love the dancing emoji at the end!
