There is so much talk right now about public sector funding and what is coming next. I had someone ask me today, “Do you think our jobs are safe?”i never answer that lightly. People are not asking out of curiosity. They are asking out of worry.
How do you handle questions when you do not have clear answers yourself?

I say that. It doesn't alleviate any of their concerns, but I'm always going to prioritize being honest with employees over all else at work. If it comes down to it, I'd rather get on management's bad side for being too transparent than on the employees' for intentionally misleading them.

I respect that approach. I also lean toward honesty, even when it is uncomfortable. People can sense when something is being softened too much.

You don't want anyone to panic, but lying to someone about something as important as their ability to pay for necessities is the worst thing you can do. I am completely honest with "I have not seen anything that indicates layoffs are coming in the near future."
