First, create a budget and then stick to it. If you have spent all your money from one bucket for the month, then stop spending in that category. Boomers use to use cash for everything and actually put their checks into envelopes... you can do the same thing with lots of savings accounts.
When money was tight (while I was changing careers) we analyzed everything. We cut a ton of streaming for antenna, free streaming, and DVDs.
* We switched from body wash to bar soap.
* We switched to generic from name brand.
* We ate more chicken and pork and almost no beef, and no restaurants.
* Vacations were in a tent, not a hotel.
* We called our garbage service and threatened to leave unless we got a discount.
* We lowered our house temp in the winter and raised it in the summer.
* When bored we went for a walk instead of going online.
* We changed our cell phone plan/provider.
* We reviewed our insurance provider and increased our insurance deductibles.
Honestly it became a bit of a game as to who could find the remaining fat in the budget. Some of it has seeped back over the last decade, but generally we are still more frugal from the experience.
I love the idea if gamifying it!
Deleted all the shopping apps off my phone. Turns out I wasn't actually buying stuff I needed, I was just bored and scrolling. Way harder to impulse buy when you have to open a browser and type in the URL.
This is great advice! I’m going to do this too.
To stretch your salary, track every expense and set small weekly spending limits instead of aiming for zero spending, which is easier to sustain. Meal planning, automatic savings, and unsubscribing from marketing emails can also help curb impulse purchases. Is anyone else finding it harder than usual to stick to budgets, even if they usually consider themselves frugal? I’ve scaled back even more, and it can still be a struggle.
Great pointers, thank you! I’ve found it especially difficult to stick to a grocery budget, but lowering my online shopping has helped lessen the blow. I’ll work on setting up a more formal budget!

Have a budget and every month, I input my expenses and categorize it into what I purchased as wants and needs. It helps me try to limit my purchases from the want category
Great advice! I’ll try this
