"There’s been a situation where an employee went ghost for a couple of days." No matter what your sick or PTO policy looks like, this is never okay, with the exception of an extreme event like a car crash. If anyone gets sick here, they're expected to inform their boss. Going MIA for multiple days would not fly.

Yeah I completely agree, was very strange as all management tried to contact but was getting nothing. To the point where it was then classed as rude and really starting to annoy us as you can’t just go ghost, or at least make a family member get to contact your work for them if you are completely unable to do it yourself. But bottom line is work needs to be informed of your whereabouts ASAP.
We accrue our PTO every pay check. So our sick time and PTO are all in one bucket. As long as you have hours available you are paid for it. Otherwise you have to take an unpaid day off.

Yeah that’s very fair I like that. Ours is just purely unpaid unless you have a day off for say compassionate leave but for general sick days it goes down as unpaid.
We’re told to message our manager directly, ideally before shift start. It’s paid for up to five days. Still, there’s always that guilt trip when you’re genuinely sick—it shouldn’t be that way!
