It is, unfortunately, rarely fair in those cases. It doesn’t bother me that they know who they want in a job. But telling everyone to apply and make it seem like they have no clue who will get it, just bad. I’ve definitely been in that spot and ended up leaving the company not too long after because I started applying externally for a similar role.

Oof, I feel that. It’s so frustrating when they make it look like an open race but the winner’s basically decided. Totally makes you rethink sticking around.
I had a similar experience last year. I was the natural choice for a promotion, but the person interviewing me already had a friend in mind. It was clear throughout the interview that she was doing it because she was forced to, not because I was being considered. It sucks.

Ugh, that’s rough. Been there too interviews that feel like a checkbox exercise really suck.

That is one of the most discouraging experiences. When a role feels open but is actually already decided, it makes the whole process feel performative. It teaches you quickly that sometimes interviews are more formality than opportunity.

Exactly! It’s like the whole process is performative. At least it teaches you fast how things really work there.

Yeah, that stings. It’s tough when you put in real effort and realize the decision was probably made before the posting even went up. Happens more often than people admit. I try to treat those moments as info about how that place really operates. Did it change how you approached internal postings after that?

Yeah, that’s a good way to look at it. I started seeing these moments as intel on the company rather than a knock on me.

Just to be devil's advocate, could they have been the best candidate if you all thought they'd get it? I had a similar situation before except they weren't best fit didn't even last 4 weeks.

True! Sometimes the “obvious choice” isn’t actually the best fit, which makes it even more annoying.
