Gorgeous questions to be asking. Thanks for sharing the article. I built a mentorship program for exactly this reason. The managers are barely surviving and have nothing left to give in guiding the next generation of leaders. Intentional and scheduled time to meet with people and help them open up about their needs and real experiences is a huge part of it. Don’t wait for them to seek you out. Go to them and ask if they want your time and attention. Generally they do and will be so grateful to be seen. Keep asking the human questions!
We had to start with trust. Our managers weren't disengaged because they didn’t care - they just didn’t feel equipped. So we brought in coaching, gave them language to talk about inclusion, and encouraged vulnerability. That opened the door to real change.
