Every workplace will differ, but I recommend learning how to distinguish between legal and policy (or political) issues and try to stay out of the latter.
I like this a lot did work in local government before but my first job was kind of a shitshow and involvement in politics is something I hated about it

I don’t know how much background you have in your new area but I am a young local government attorney (almost 2 years soon). I work on a variety of matters (some litigation, some transactional). Local government was brand new to me when I came in and a lot of the areas of law I assist with also were. My main piece of advice for myself and now others I meet in the same boat is to “get comfortable with being uncomfortable.” You may get the wonkiest of issues to research. That is why you’re there. You won’t know a lot at first and it will take some time to get your bearings, but you will get to a point where when a staff member poses an issue, you will have a good starting point of where to look (statute, code, policy) to give well-rounded advice (even if an issue of first impression for your locality). The other piece of advice I recommend is to network with surrounding localities and others in your state. It’s helpful to call someone up when you’re boggled with an issue to see if they’ve dealt with it before (so you don’t reinvent the wheel).
Lastly, join your state bar’s local government section, which may publish articles or have CLEs you can brush up on for particular issues that may have recently been hot-button topics to give you some background as to where the law is for a particular subject matter.
