At your company, do you request a background check before or after an offer? In my experience we always send out a conditional offer first ( contingent on background check) but I've heard other companies are starting to request a background check prior to an offer. How does it work for you/ what have you experienced?

I’m job searching and am primarily looking at postings that don’t include my promoted title — I’m not sure how to professionally articulate in an interview why I would be willing to take a “step down”.
