This is illegal and also it’s illegal for companies to tell
Their employees not to talk about their compensation.
It's absurd. We have offices all over the world with different labor laws, so this would be very hard to implement. But anyway, as a long-time HR leader, I can say that the younger generation (20-somethings for sure, and even many older employees) openly discuss salary, bonus, raises. Even if you TRIED to prevent them, they would just find ways to do it you couldn't track.
It's actually MUCH easier just to "do the right thing" which is to pay everyone market rate for the work they do. And with increasing pay transparency laws around the world, this will become ever more evident to employees, because they can see job postings and pay ranges.
