If you’re young and enjoy being out and about, walking to bars, restaurants, social life, music venues, and all that stuff, Capitol Hill is the place to be my friends. I loved living in Cap Hill when I was young and without a car. It’s the livliest part of the city. Move there and have fun, make some memories and enjoy the moment while you have it. I wouldn’t trade it for anything. 👍🏼
Yes, you definitely can depending on what neighborhood you live in, what you like to do, etc.
For example, if you were to live somewhere like Lower Queen Anne, you'd have plenty of grocery stores and restaurants within walking distance. You could also walk to most tourist attractions, parks, etc. And public transit would keep you well connected to other parts of town.
You can always rent a gig car if you want to go hiking for the day, hit up the furniture stores, etc.
With all that in mind, I still own a car. 😂 I like the freedom of being able to hop in and drive to the gym, a store, a hike, etc.
26M, single. Only temporarily relocating while we're still work remote - if I like it, I'll make the move more permanent.
Skew toward more walkable (or bikeable) areas
I’m also moving to Seattle soon. I’m 26/F looking at either Cap hill, or South lake union
Personally, I find South Lake Union to be very sterile and corporate. I'd prefer to live some place like Lower Queen Anne which is just a stone throw away from SLU but has more neighborhood charm
As to Capital Hill, I'd generally steer clear of living in the Pike and Pine corridor given the number of restaurants, bars, and homeless...live a couple streets over so you're still walking distance but it's not an annoyance
Pretty much every neighborhood in the city is walkable. Capitol Hill, Lower Queen Anne, Fremont, Ballard, and Belltown probably have the greatest concentration of restaurants bars and at least one grocery store.
Agree with the previous poster who described South Lake Union as somewhat sterile. Especially now that Amazon is not returning to office until 2022, that's not a neighborhood I would consider.
OP, you mentioned cycling and while Seattle is a very bike-friendly city you might keep in mind that it is also very hilly which is probably different from your experience riding a bike in Dallas.
I’d disagree with what others are saying. I’ve lived in Seattle my entire life and the best locations are only accessible by car. You’ll be missing out on a lot of fun adventures without one. You could always stick to the city, but watch out for the increasing crime and daily shootings!
