Single, no kids, $150k after taxes, renting an apartment in Gold Coast area. I’m saving and investing about 50-60% of my income. Kidding aside, supporting a family is expensive.
Kids.
Kids.
I’m in a very similar situation. I’m married, in my 40s, two kids, HHI of $212. Our home is very modest, and we drive older used cars. Our vacations are only road-trips to stay with family. We don’t eat out except for pizza on Fridays. We are trying to save more for retirement now because we had to pause it so many times over the years. But I keep being tempted to pause again because unexpected expenses like car maintenance and medical bills keep popping up. I just thought by now we’d be making more progress but our savings keeps going down. Anyway this is more of a vent session but just wanted to let you know, I completely identify and have actually been losing sleep over it the last few weeks.
We also only do road trip. Rarely eat out. Drive a modest vehicle- only have 1 car! I get depressed over it sometimes because I had this idea that life would feel more comfortable by the time I hit my 40s, but yet here I am still doing the hustle… we had a LOT of crazy unexpected expenses that hit us in our 30s.. so I feel so behind. And I’m just tired.
We don’t live an extravagant lifestyle, but are able to take reasonable vacations a year.. I feel like we are always paycheck to paycheck. We are in our 40s with two working adults. We work our butts off. Is this the case for everyone else? What have we done wrong?
Same story. We have complicated health issues which takes what feels like a generous household income and turns us into 1 or 2 emergencies away from financial ruin.
How much are you putting away between 401k and investments?
No enough. My partner has a pension. And then we have about $200K in a 401K. We’ve paused putting towards the 401K because we had experience some job loss and are catching up
You must not be living as frugally as you think. Are kids in private school.
Not sure I’d say we are frugal, but we are conservative in comparison to families around us.
Single, no kids, live alone NW side in a 2br condo. $82k, paycheck to paycheck and sometimes worse. Still supporting an unemployed family member and paying off bills from a long illness. It’ll be a while before I’m in the black.
Husband and I live in the City on the Northside in an apartment. No kids. About $123K before taxes. I only contribute 4% to 401k because that’s all I can afford. Husband has student loan. I have 2 surgeries I’m making payments on. Credit card debt from being unemployed during Covid being chipped away. Try to put away $700/month into savings, since that was drained to Zero during Covid. Not a lot left over after rent, utilities, insurance, internet, car payment, etc. Enough to order out and do some shopping but not for anything extravagant.
