Thoughts on a Omega De Ville Prestige as a first luxury watch? Would be ~$7.5K USD at retail. Some friends have said great things about Omega as a starter, whereas others say it’s not worth it over a Rolex Oyster Perpetual (which would be similar in cost).
I personally love how clean the design is, the use of gold, and the thinner band as it links the watch … find the Rolex band design to be too chunky.

It’s more protection than say buying off Reddit or any of the watch forums, but still can be a hassle if it turns out to be a fake - just google eBay fake watch Reddit for stories. For what it’s worth getting refunded from eBay on a fake bag for my wife was a simple process.
Best advice for any second hand purchase is buy the seller first - only deal with people that have hundreds and hundreds of positive reviews and avoid any with any hint of impropriety. I’d also be cautious buying something second hand that I hadn’t very deeply researched - tons of Frankenwatches floating around being sold as “vintage”. If the deal seems too good to be true, it’s probably for a reason…
I do. It’s much better than buying from FB marketplace or Reddit. At least there’s a 3rd party looking at it before it reaches you. Outside of that, your options are limited.
That said, I still prioritize traceability: can one register the watch online? Are there box & papers? Any original purchase receipts?
And perhaps try buying things that are harder to fake. For me, it was the grand seiko spring drive: there are no well-faked spring drives. It’s a different type of movement.
The eBay authenticity card comes with a QR code that is linked to the Authenticator report (and a picture of the set in their workshop). If you have issues with the report, you can launch a complain there. It’s a good system that introduces some traceability.
