26 yr old M. I’m trying to get into watches more and have a couple that are <$300. Is it worth getting one now in $1k-$2.5k range or should I just wait a few more years and get one for ~$6k?

I’m confused why you think you can make this decision with price as your only input.

A watch is more than a price tag. What do you like? What do you enjoy wearing? How do you use your watch? What aspects of watch design or history speak to you?

There’s a watch for every price point, once you know what you want. There’s no good way to make a decision based on price alone.

Read this bowl. Read hodinkee. Think about it, you like watches or you like others who like watches? Price doesn’t mean a thing. I have a 10k watch and I have a $15 watch. I wear both of them. I love them both and don’t make my decision on ‘oh I want to look rich today’. Watches are like cars, you are a car guy for a reason even if you can’t afford them or you’re not a car guy.

SC1 nailed it right in the head ^ listen to him bro

I have a ~$750 Hamilton that I adore. Would a $6k Rolex really make me 8x happier? Probably not. I still want a Rolex someday, but you can get a great watch for under $1k that will make you plenty happy

I value my $1k watches as much as my $5k+ ones. Probably wear them equally as much. If you like something now in your price range, get it! If you can't find something you like, then you may as well wait.

I think you should read up and look into the watch community. Lots of micro brands you and explore. Alternatively, do your research and save for the big price. Read HODINKEE, I love their articles. Buy a watch because it suits your personality (as it should be an extension of you) and don’t buy it based on the price or brand. You won’t find the value or joy in that.

Lots of good advice already, I would just say that if the $6k watch you want is a Rolex (and you need to scratch that itch), then you should save up and get that Rolex. If my assumption is wrong, then follow the advices above, do research, bc there are lots of great time pieces at any price point.

For what it’s worth, I’ve got an Omega and a Rolex, but my favorite watch is a Hamilton worth probably 1/10th the others. It’s not about price, but rather what your personal preference is.

When I was 25 I got my first “big boy” watch Sinn 556i in bracelet. New maybe $1.2k, got a used one for $800.

It’s a versatile watch (dress up / dress down) that’ll garner respect from watch ppl since it’s rare to see one in the wild and they have in-house movements.

It honesty gets the most play right now during WFH, 8 years later.

I’m 99% sure the only watches under $1k with in house mechanical movements are Seikos.

Reason and logic does not really apply in this hobby. It is all about how you feel - and if you feel that you need a Rolex, then there is no shame in saving up for one.

Conversely, if for instance you always lusted after the electric blue Seamaster from the 90s since you first saw it as a kid - then go for it! It’s not a lesser watch, buy what makes you happy.

Know where I can find one? Math teacher in 8th grade took mine. 30 years later still waiting to get it back... All kidding aside, great watch!,

Good to have a flex watch for some situations...

on the way to an interview this morning eating a sandwich. I walked past a homeless man who had a stray cat perched on his lap. He asked for a bite of sandwich to feed them both as they hadn’t eaten in days. I gave the whole sandwich over and headed off to the interview. As I got to the interview room there was a large executive chair facing away from me. The chair turned and on top was a mirror. When looking in the mirror I could see the cat. I am the cat. Truly inspirational when you work hard

Finally got my hands on one. I was expecting it to feel much cheaper than it does. Definitely still get the quality feel that Swatch is known for. The weight is nothing like a real speedy, but still looks great imo. I went with the Mission to Pluto as I didn’t want one that looks too much like the real thing, and the Mars/Sun versions had the gauche white strap imo. Overall pleased for $260.
