I did a post about this on LinkedIn recently, this is what I put (as someone who manages our recruitment:
Why I think cover letters still matter…
A CV can tell me what you’ve done, but a cover letter shows me who you are.
When a cover letter is done properly, it’s clear straight away that you’ve:
🔵 Invested the time to research the company.
🔵 Tailored your approach, rather than copy-paste.
🔵 Understood and mentioned the company’s values.
🔵 Explained why you want this role, not just any role.
🔵 Linked your skills to the requirements in a way that feels personal.
We’ve had some brilliant cover letters come through in the past. Some thoughtful, some funny, but all of them showing that the candidate had taken the time to really think about their application. And those are the ones that stick with you.
Yes, everyone needs a job. But there’s a big difference between someone applying for anything and someone applying because they actually want this job. A cover letter is one of the easiest ways to show us that you’re serious about applying, not just testing your luck with one click. So if you’re thinking of applying for a role with us, don’t skip the cover letter because we really do read them!
If you are recruiting through a recruitment agency, then I probably wouldn't bother but if you are applying directly to a company - a great well thought out cover letter is essential in my opinion. Just make sure you double check what you are sending (sending the correct company name, job title you are applying for etc).
Kirsty, thank you for such a thorough response! So helpful and ultimately seems worth it to spend the extra 15-20 minutes drafting it for jobs you are passionate about

When I was hiring, I’ll admit I don’t always read them. But since so few do it, I do remember the people who wrote them.
That’s super helpful insight!
Recruiters just want to see you tried. Try not to repeat anything from your resume and use the cover letter to say something they can’t get from your LinkedIn.
Great callout. It definitely seems to be more of way to show effort and interest than anything else
