We do monthly watercoolers for those employees that want to be more engaged despite our fully remote workplace. It's great for those employees that want it and entirely optional for those that don't.

That’s a good idea, I like that!
I think that all depends on what the purpose of the engagement is. If the workforce is distributed there may not be much need for cohesion, so just having people in a Slack channel may be fine. If people are working in close proximity and teamwork matters, then some business oriented socializing might be useful. But, again, it all depends on what's trying to be achieved.

Yes that is a very good point also.
We love hearing what the employees think, so try setting a survey to ask them questions about what they want and think, then act on it. You can also try pairing up colleagues randomly each week for a 15-minute check-in and encourage them to swap one win and one challenge. These two strategies work really well.

I like that, gives everyone a chance to share some honest feedback through surveys rather than an intimate 1-1 conversation between management and the employee.
