How many billable hours do people in prosecution tend to average each month? I’ve gone through waves of feeling like my billable hours requirement is reasonable to feeling like I’m drowning and can’t possibly do it for that long.

I do about 150 actually billed hours per month. The amount worked is definitely higher than 150 when you consider flat fee arrangements and write offs. I would guess 180ish.

When I am above these amounts, I have trouble keeping up.

PLEASE HELP! I’m a first year commercial litigation associate at a boutique firm. I am deciding between two offers. One is to go in-house paying roughly the same as I make now. The second offer is from big law as a commercial real estate associate, paying double.

I would love to go in-house and never worry about billable hours again but the big law money is super tempting. Advice?? Is the money really worth it?

Received a job offer. Was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on a concern I had about it. It's an entry level position, and I don't have much experience. The billables are 2040 a year. For billable hours in civil litigation and insurance defense, is 2040 hours for a 1st year associate on the high end in this field for a small or midsize firm? It seems like most attorneys I know have minimum requirements of around 1800. The compensation is around 80k a year.

16 weeks and so worried all of the stress I’m under is going to hurt the baby. Between work, my own scary (non-pregnancy) health stuff, the pandemic, my mom (who is a widow and lives alone, basically isolated by choice due to covid) is having health issues, and pressures to keep billable hours up, I’ve been having complete breakdowns. Today I spent almost the entire day crying and now have to make up the billable time this weekend. I really worry abt what effect this will have on the babe.

Been practicing complex lit (employment and consumer class/representative actions) on the plaintiff side for last 6 years of my 7 year career. Just accepted a defense side offer, with a billable requirement/initial bonus eligibility of 1750 hours. I know billing is different on the defense side than simply recording hours toward a lodestar on the plaintiff side. How many "real" total hours is 1750 billable hours? I know it's supposed to be relatively low, but not sure what it really means?

In prosecution, if a patent attorney does not try to remove prior art cited by an examiner (eg a 130 affidavit to assert an exception under102(b)(1)(A)), but instead makes arguments to overcome the art, may the attorney made an admission that bars removing the art later in prosecution. Just received such a transfer case, looking for options.

Does anyone find an attack on the Examiner’s prima facia showing of obviousness a lot more effective than distinguishing each and every prior art reference.

I recently underwrote a reply to final. Didn’t even bother with the references since I just got the case. Overcame the rejections.

Can anyone comment on how effective this is?
