Take medical leave for mental health
I’ve taken mental health leave and it’s so helpful
Yes I took FMLA and my short term disability insurance paid my bills. You’ll need a doctor to sign off.
Search #fmlamentalhealth in the Big Law and Law bowls for more info about the process, and FAQS.
You can get a letter from your primary care doctor that states you have a “medical condition” resulting in sleep and cognitive issues impairing your ability to work (or whatever symptoms are appropriate to your condition). It’s customary for the letters to be vague so no need to get into your diagnosis.
Separate, you should meet with a psychiatrist and get a full work up done for your physical health.
*Separately,*
Currently on intermittent FMLA. Offering info in case it helps- My therapist said I have anxiety and it affects my ability to concentrate and focus. That was literally all it took and she filled out the form giving me leave for a max of 8 hours per week. It helps on the weeks I’m feeling gassed but ya know a longer time off would probably be better
Interesting. Thank you!
A1 and AA1: What kind of documentation do you need to take a mental health leave? I’ve debated it myself.
Thank you !
I am so sorry. It’s so hard when you’re exhausted. Every.single.step feels heavier, harder. And sometimes it accumulates and feels like an impossible weight on your shoulders. Ugh. So hard.
Please take a leave and take care of you.
Why not work push through it? Because if you’re fried, it will compromise your work. Don’t put yourself in that position.
I have been in that stretched-to-nothing place. Only rest fixes it.
Also, please seriously consider using your firm’s employee assistance program or, if none, zocdoc or some other platform to find a therapist. It’s an investment in your working through the hard year you’ve experienced. We all need help and support at times, and being able to call it (i.e., “help!”) is critical. Push forward through the options until you find a therapist who is a fit for you. This is a game-changer.
You are so very worth it. Hang in there. We are pulling for you.
