Does anyone have any insights on what a typical Sr. Associate Director makes at Boehringer Ingelheim? I have a range of 170-180k which I think is fair but don’t want to be underpaid. Also, any information regarding retirement planning or medical/dental benefits would be helpful. Haven’t gotten much out of HR. Thanks in advance!

How do you all deal with the guilt of leaving a comany/ team? I have been working at Microsoft for 1 year now, and seriously considering moving. I find the code base to be very legacy and I mostly work on obscure bugs that I spend so much time on, mostly due to navigating this large code base and not having much docs to refer to. Hence I find the job slightly unsatisfying, and that I could learn more elsewhere. However, I love the wlb, the team and company culture. The guilt stops my applying.

I'd look at the ranges in your area. 90k starting in STL for your first SWE role seems pretty good, especially with the recent downturn (and without knowing about comp your area). Another factor to consider is brand recognition, it'll be a lot easier to land future roles with a recognized brand on your resume.
Not telling you not to negotiate btw, just noting down some factors you may not have considered. Leverage and knowledge are the best tools to get a better offer.
Apologies btw, *82k I meant to say. Fwiw, I've been able to negotiate without a counter. In my case, I tend to stay at companies for 3+ years, and pull that card out, e.g. "as you can see, once I find the right fit, I tend to stay and grow with the company, I'd love to do that at Boeing, and I feel that starting at X would support my goals and keep me vested for the long term" or something along those lines.
I can’t speak to your region, but I work for a government contractor in the Dayton, OH area (a major intelligence center). I think our new entry-level SWE hires typically get around $60-80k. I was hired on at the senior level 7 years ago at $80k, finally hit $90k just 3.5 years ago, $100k early last year, and got a surprise bump up to $120k just recently. That said, the last couple years here especially numbers have definitely inflated a bit from when I started. But don’t make the mistake of looking at Silicon Valley compensation and feeling disappointed (or, alternatively, work remotely for one of them).
Just to update the post. I took the job and start Sept 16th. Thanks for all your advice!
I think this is an excellent foot in the door! If you can’t get a counter offer, stay a year or two and soak up all of the experience you can, then job hop for a 25%+ raise 🙂
Do you have other offers to use as leverage? Depending on what you have as a fallback offer, you can push a lot harder. You can always use industry average in your area as leverage, however you will have to keep in mind they can say no and you may have to walk away.
In the future I recommend delaying your early interviews and accelerating the later interview processes so they align. Recruiters will usually work with you on this
What company made the offer? You can look at your position and location in Glassdoor and get an idea. If you are leveled (I, II, III, etc.) Look for that specific level. Since you are brand new, I would assume level I, so be away that the base Software Engineer role could be any one of the levels.
I decided not to counter. This was a job I wanted for a while and the offer was $20k more than I’m making now. Once I have any actual experience as a software engineer I’ll feel good about countering haha
I would accept the offer then keep applying depending on the sign on bonus terms. You don't want to accept that as you'd have to pay it back. I had a similar situation where I got an offer for 85k and kept going until I had an offer for 120k and it was my first job as well.
Take the offer. I worked at Caterpillar and with that brand recognition changed my life.
Since I have worked at Capital One, worked with the FBI and now work for the United States Department of Commerce.
None of this would have been possible without working for Caterpillar. Take the job!
I should also mention that this is a job that I have been looking at for a while, and was my ideal position when I started to work towards becoming a SWE
Then definitely bring up why you think you'll be a good fit at Boeing on your counter. Don't be afraid to show a bit of passion for the job. I doubt they would look at it like "Well we don't have to try because he already likes us." They probably want someone who has a passion for the job, company and mission more than someone just looking for a job.
But 8k bonus plus 82 makes 90, just save your 8k and pay yourself out with your salary
