Typically companies do not rescind just because you try and negotiate. And if one does, that’s a huge red flag. I wouldn’t want to work for someone like that anyway. Negotiating is normal!
I’ve been on the hiring side in 2 different companies. Typically, offers are made with some wiggle room to negotiate - how much wiggle room does depends on industry. The times when we’ve rescinded and moved on to another candidate: (i) When a person tried to come in way above range (ex. I had a position in which we had stated that the range was $60-$75k DOE - when the offer was made for $65, the person came back wanting $110k - when we said we could not match as this was well above the stated range, he wanted to lecture us on how he could easily get that for a similar position at another company - I wished him the best of luck with that and moved on to making an offer to the 2nd candidate), (ii) when a person insisted upon multiple rounds of negotiation - I would say that if the company hasn’t made a satisfactory offer by the 2nd offer, they are just not going to and you should move on.
Most of the time it stems from a lack of self-awareness. I’ve been called “cheap” because we did not meet someone’s counter-offer. The guy got condescending and I told him that if he talked to me like trash I could only imagine how he treated others. I then gave him some unsolicited advice before he moseyed down the road.

I have rescinded an offer due to someone’s approach to negotiating. Thought we’d found a good candidate, but they came back to us with a ridiculous salary ask (40% over offer) with the justification that they’d heard that someone else at the company was earning that level - I.e., their entire approach to the process red flagged them - their approach showed them to be immature and unreasonable, which didn’t work for the role we were filling.
Unless they tell you that the offer is their best and final offer, if an offer gets rescinded just because you try to negotiate then count your lucky stars, you’ve avoided a bullet. Also you should be negotiating before anything gets put into writing. Any company representative who simply turns around an offer letter doesn’t know what they’re doing.
I have hired a lot of people. I always expect a counter, but I also fight for a good initial offer so sometimes, I can't actually do more. But my advice is try, if they can't move off their initial offer, then you have to make the decision if it's acceptable or not.
One thing you may do if they can't move on base salary is try to get a signing bonus or additional stock, something like that. I've actually had more luck with those two myself over getting a higher base salary. But whatever you do, don't try to go too much higher than the initial offer and don't drag it out. Especially if they meet your counter. Sign right away to show you appreciate their willingness to negotiate.
this is a great response thank you! i have further questions and would like to discuss with you. can you please DM . fishbowl has disabled the ability to send a message to you
I have rescinded a few after they asked for more than our posted range and would not come down.
