Sounds like your goals align with being a board member for a non profit. Most require some prior experience volunteering or getting plugged in at the org to get a seat.
Rising Star
Nonprofits don't have a lot of money for consultants. Especially now that Trump has cut funding for many of them:
"Based on reports in 2025 and early 2026, the Trump administration actively cut, froze, or terminated billions in federal funding and grants to various nonprofits. These actions, targeting areas like health, education, and social services, were often designed to claw back funds from programs deemed ideologically biased or "woke".
Starting in early 2025, nonprofits received notices freezing federal funds, impacting job training, mental health, and emergency shelters.
Major Grant Terminations: In May 2025, the DOJ terminated 373 grants worth approximately $819.7 million, affecting over 550 organizations."
I would start by volunteering after work or on weekends to scratch that itch. You can absolutely transition to a nonprofit - particularly if you’re skilled in fundraising - but keep in mind that the work environment can still feel very corporate or even be toxic. (I’m a public health consultant so I’ve been on both sides.)
Oh cool! Yes, there’s pro bono consulting for nonprofits in my city (Atlanta)
