Yes. 3-6 months for private corporations and up to 1 year for Government institutions.
OP , your benefits( health, dental, RRSP match, stock match etc ) might kick in only after probation. Some cheap ass Canadian employers do this , not all. Check your offer letter or ask the HR a very specific question "what changes after probation".
I had 3 months probation as well , nothing changed before or after. But I guess technically they can let you go during probation without cause. (Unsure of the exact legality)
Pretty common in private sector but hey it’s a good opportunity to create a checkin with your employer and sometimes (when you’ve kicked it out if the park) a chance to show off some great work, in a formalized 3 month review process. But yes a common practice
