I could say that. I had zero prior leadership experience, but they offered me a promotion into it. To that point, I did show I was willing to learn and be reliable. Now the question is, how to prove myself?
The best managers I’ve had gave me a stretch project before I felt “ready”—leading a client presentation, owning a small campaign, or mentoring a junior. If you want that, you could go to your manager with a specific proposal like, “Can I own X piece of this next project with your support?” It’s easier for them to say yes to something concrete.

This! Totally agree with this post. Advocating for the types of chances you want them to take on you is a great first step so you can be top of mind for them when opportunity arises. It’s not the be all and all but a great first step.

After college, I had CD take a chance on me. I started as a jr CW and rose to ACD in a few years under her leadership. During that time, she encouraged big ideas and being unafraid to present. Best boss I ever had. I try to emulate her as I lead my own team. Three years ago, I hired a stay-at-home mom re-entering the work force after 10 years. Best hire I ever made. And I support big ideas and taking initiative from my team.
