I think by the time OCI rolls around there will be many more firms who have agreed to similar settlements and the law students won’t ask about them bc they will view them as par for the course in order to work in big law.
OCI is already here. It’s always here now.

On a serious note, I think the real reputational hit to these firms will be when it leaks what the exact pro bono work is.
It’s one thing to ”bend the knee” in theory, it’ll be a whole other can of worms when an ICE agent shoots & kills a US citizen b/c they have tattoos, and some Skadden Partner is beside them at the arraignment.
Yeah people are going to be pretty upset when they're helping veterans and fighting antisemitism.

I would be more likely to go to PW and Skadden because of this because it shows they are committed to making deals to keep business stable rather than getting caught up in costly political fights
Exactly C2. Any firm that believes they are permanently outside of trumps crosshairs by making these deals is mistaken. And 100% should know better. Especially the litigators and anyone in CRE.
Gen Z leans right. Tons of students are probably pumped to see these firms “get what they deserved” and to see the firms work with the administration to resolve the issue.

You’re assuming that leaning slightly right on certain questions = excited to see a president completely ignore / attack rule of law and use the office to extract personal vengeance. If you look at polling of that group (gen z males with higher ed), ~20% support actions that I think reasonably analogize to this.
GenZ men are pretty conservative, due to being bashed as automatically toxic for their entire natural lives.

Well that’s a real chicken or the egg issue isn’t it 🤔
I don’t think it’s a *positive* for them, but I do wonder if it could be a good filter, as long as they still have good applicants?
Like, it would take out all the highly mission-driven progressives. Could be interesting how that affects tangible metrics like 5-year retention and billables. It’s possible that it helps, even if your GPA median goes down a bit.
They will obviously get above average candidates who just want to work and aren’t these bizarre weirdos who think the firm is supposed to be an extension of their political beliefs. Life isn’t a hallmark movie.
If it’s an event with attorneys mingling, probably by mumbling something and moving on to another conversation, and if it’s really aggressive questioning, making a mental note of who is asking. If it’s a panel, then giving the HR response.
I'm at one of those firms and if anyone asks I'll just tell them not to come if they don't want to.
And I'll probably put a note to HR that they're a likely troublemaker. Saying that in full disclosure: students should know that firms will have this focus.
Your initial comment was all about what YOU would do.
Then it became firms don’t want to hire activists and I agreed with you. But you also asked if I disagreed or thought you were wrong, and I responded, bc I do think it’s wrong to penalize people and report them for simply asking questions. That’s some McCarthyism type shizz imo. And here we are.
More than happy to let it go but it’s misleading to suggest it’s been one sided.
Probably with the same bs they wrote in the Skadden alumni email that was just distributed.
What was that
