Leading has zero incentive these days.
Trying to be the devil’s advocate: maybe you also need to learn to let it go on your side without over-controlling?
I always tell leaders that if they don't have a succession plan, it is because they didn't properly succession plan. It is on them and not anyone else.
Every generation is different and it is important to allow folks to do things differently as long as it gets results. You are going to have to release at some point and let people sink or swim. You may be pleasantly surprised.
This. Kinda. It seems like “succession planning” these days is leaders just waiting for people to “step up” but there isn’t true coaching happening to make people feel prepared and then empowered. Across all levels it seems like these days there isn’t time or space for younger employees to learn, make mistakes and try again. There is no tolerance for a learning curve and no one wants to be set up to fail.
Short your company’s stock and do the succession asap.
I find it difficult to believe there isn’t anyone on your team, or on adjacent teams, who is unwilling to step up and lead.
As for capability, that responsibility falls on us as Partners: to develop talent, provide the right opportunities, and ensure they are positioned to excel and be ready when leadership is needed.
