I also worked at a famous agency and won some awards. After hundreds of applications and networking like crazy I recently took a retail job at an outdoor retailer to clear my head a few days a week. For the first time in a long time I actually look forward to going into work and am learning a bunch of other valuable soft skills. Only hard part comes around pay day when I see my check. Try to keep it in perspective. Hopefully this is temporary. Or…you never know who you’ll give a ride to that could lead to a new opportunity if you keep an open mind. Hang in there!
Don't put everything on your resume, only relevant stuff so it doesn't seem so above and beyond what they are looking for.
Good for you. Without getting into details it was getting dark. And not to candy coat it, it’s still hard in my days off. But I start talking to a customer about something I’m passionate about. I’m seen by them as an expert (vs a washed up old creative in this industry.). And they smile and thank you at the end of it. Sure there are some bad customers. But they are coming in for you to help them solve a problem—especially at a place like Home Depot. If you can get it down to being that simple and not let ego or how colleagues are doing get all up in your head it makes the job search more bearable and may even open your eyes to other stuff. Like I’ve found through this I’m a natural sales person with infectious enthusiasm. Could that go from hourly employee to a district sales manager maybe? Who knows? But you’ll find it’ll beat staying at home and potentially listening to too many demons. Good luck! And don’t be afraid to be human and ask lots of questions to learn more if you decide to do it.
I’m in the same situation although I am still receiving my severance. I don’t want to go back to the industry. I’m trying to reinvent myself. I have never worked for so many people, especially women, who lack empathy. It’s all about $$$
What part of the country are you in? Or city?
It’s rough out there. Our industry has been in the toilet, and the rest of the economy might be next.
Advertising is often the canary in the coal mine
Winning Cannes this year and can't even land a job? An uber driver?
Are you for real? Or just trolling?
@ECD2 Some of the most talented creatives I've worked with, many who inspired me earlier in my career, have never won an award. I'm a bit more of a realist that ad awards are more often luck, being on the right brief at the right time with an open-minded client. We see Cannes winning ideas all the time on every brief. It comes down to what the client is willing to do
To your second point, yeah what we won was definitely designed for Cannes. It was real, but didn't solve any magnificent problems. Probably why it won bronze and shortlist over something bigger. It was just meant to be creative and get some PR
Still, I had some hopes it would help. the market is just too bad right now
I know it’s rough out there, but I feel like if you won awards recently it shouldn’t be that hard to land something, especially if you’re not being picky. Is there some part of the story we’re not hearing?
Hang in there! A lot of things fall into place in the next few weeks that affect staffing into Q1 and beyond. Something will turn up, it almost always does.
Covid was great for remote freelancing. I had my best 2 years ever. Sad to say this is spite of all the deaths, but it’s true.
Have you thought about reaching out to family friends, University friends or just SMEs in general offering marketing services. Thats what I've done.
I’m possibly on a similar trajectory. Dozens of prestigious awards, but only getting small gigs here and there. I’m in total disbelief that things are going this way.
I certainly don't have dozens, so this hurts to hear. The people in this thread thinking awards are magic wands are a bit detached from the last 2-3 years of reality
