What have other people's experiences been working for companies under WPP?

I work at Grey and so far I've learned that WPP stands for "Why pay people" and "why promote people" and "white people problems"

Having worked at Ogilvy, not good. I never had that sense that what we were doing was groundbreaking. Just lots of subpar, always-on workflows. I genuinely think it and other WPP agencies have this almost too big to fail type environment. It lends itself to having no identity but simply its ability in leveraging its scale. I will probably never work for another WPP agency as it disillusioned me that much.

Piggybacking on this. Anyone ever made a lateral/minimally upward move within the network and lived to tell about it? This includes for relocation.

Hopefully they have a less environmental friendly (and much more productive) printing policy than Omnicom. I mean, do you really expect me to have to "verify my interest" before printing the god damned deck AND still be on time for that meeting? Pretty sure these rules were written by a robot.

WPP meal policy is crazy in NYC.

I got a promotion and a double raise because three people left in my group and I got a job offer like a week later. This allowed me to move into that position and then receive the matched job offer because they were desperate. Otherwise, most have seen no promotion/raise in more than 2 years and if you are at the higher levels, apparently some have not seen anything in 5 years. It's absurd.

Thank you OP! I meant to another WPP agency.

I don't know of another agency. I know of two failure stories, but transferring from one Ogilvy office to another has been a way of quick upward mobility for some in our office

There are some pros in terms of how big it is (the biggest), and some cons...because of how big it is...

The culture and work/life balance is horrible. Although I recently learned that it's only certain departments. 🤔 Also, pay is shit.

What should I reasonably expect from a junior?

I manage a junior developer that's been with the company for about 18 months. I end up providing them of TON of support. I need to give them extremely detailed instructions or they fail. For bugs, I need to point them to a specific function that's causing the bug. For new features, I'm basically writing their method signatures and defining their test cases.

I've tried asking them to do more on their own, but when I do, they fail spectacularly.
