Honestly, I wonder if it's ageism in the industry or people starting to not care about staying informed and relevant to current culture. I've met older creatives who keep on the pulse, and I've met people who are clearly stuck in the past, always using phrases like "back in the golden age of advertising"
Is it ageist or defining what makes a person no longer able to do the work? Younger people who also don't stay on top of culture get phased out too. At my agency, some the older coworkers are my favorites. But they also know what's relevant today and make the effort to know. Just like I made myself download and use BeReal

Is it a crime? While I personally think it’s terrifying that very few of us retire, we all know that’s the deal. Complaining about ageism in a youth focused industry is like complaining about a lack of 50 y.o. NBA stars.
Intellectually, I can understand that I’m being over-paid to say “this is cool, that isn’t” and a company doesn’t owe it to me to over-pay me to do that well into my 50s. So I should save up, go in-house or build a very strong network or move up to protect against it.
It’s scary, sure. But we get paid for who we are more than what we do and it’s not like we don’t have fair warning. The ones who fall victim tend to let their tastes, and books, calcify.
I’d say I’m surprised that older creatives don’t start shops full of older creatives, but I do think those exist, they’re just regional.
That last paragraph.
It’s going to take more people who care passionately about -isms to filter up through the ranks and be, themselves, impacted by ageism. Given how homogenous (frequently by design) the advertising industry has been, and how resistant to real change until recently, it may take a generation or two for that to happen.
I'm not sure it's ever going to be possible to completely eliminate personal bias, which is the root of ageism in the workplace. Someone who automatically assumes an older creative is out of touch, or a younger one is too green to be trusted. This is human nature and would need to be addressed on an individual basis.
I don’t understand why people want to try to eliminate these things. It will never happen because bad people and hatred will always exist lmao you’d have to control people’s thoughts.
You cannot eliminate racism, sexism, ageism, homophobia, etc. They have been around since the beginning of time, and thinking that you can eliminate them along with controlling human thoughts is absurd.
Next you’re going to suggest trying to stop “fat phobia” lol
