I am beyond frustrated. My company has ambitious plans to grow our Sales team, so I had to shift priorities, which is disruptive, but fine, I get it. There’s urgency to hire fast, yet leadership keeps adding new requirements mid-search. I’ve restarted this process three times. THREE. How do you push back on scope creep when the exec team can’t make up their mind?

I would probably but a little too aggressive here and just say look, let's have one meeting where we all agree on what you're looking for and what we need so we can make we're hiring the right people

You need to draw a line in the sand and get EVERYONE to agree to deadline for reqs. Meaning that once the list is final, it cannot be changed, and you will hire based on it.

Before that date, over-communicate to the extent that they get sick of it. That should give everyone ample opportunity to feed into the process and give you back-up in case anyone wants to change their mind at the last minute.

This has happened to me before. If they want me to take the lead on this, I would own it entirely. Of course, I’d listen to leadership's input, but I’d be very firm about the timing and wouldn’t accept major changes mid-process unless it’s clear that the current approach isn’t working.

Here is a difference between managers and leaders. Managers hire people they need to “supervise” whereas leaders hire the attributes that deliver performance without supervision. Most companies over-specify when creating job descriptions because they don’t understand the role of thinking in performing work, and because they rely on brainless HR control freaks to do the hiring.
