I went back to public after working two years at industry. WLB was wonderful but career progression was so slow.
Stockholm syndrome is a thing
I am in private too I want to go back to practice but I do not want to give up my flexible work hours I constantly feel like I am doing nothing. I love my current job it just feels like I am missing something.
I think it makes more sense to take on a seasonal role in addition to your current role, start working on a side business or go for promotion at work or look at that next role. Going back to public is a mess and work life balance is a constant challenge almost a myth much like managing your own schedule.
That’s 100% the case. I would then consider the age of your kids and your wife’s input if you can truly grow a career in public or just try to move to a higher position elsewhere.
I would say think of why you left public accounting in the first place. If you can live with those things, then go back.
I would find a side hustle. You can also go back to a smaller public accounting firm with wlb. I am about to leave public for private myself.
